With let-up in rain on Thursday water started receding from inundated paddy fields in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur district.
In Tiruvarur, samba crop was inundated in 30,000 hectares. As there was no rain after Nilam crossed Chennai at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, crops are slowly rising above water. There may not be much damage as the transplanted seedlings could withstand water stagnation for a week. Samba has been taken up in 1.07 lakh hectares of which direct sowing has been applied in 60,000 hectares. In Thanjavur, inundation was only in 1,000 acres.

Ariyalur
Copious showers have played havoc with a few infrastructure facilities. Collector P. Senthilkumar, who inspected these facilities on Thursday, said the causeway on the Adhichanur-Nachiyapettai Road in T.Pazhur panchayat union, has been totally damaged. This was constructed by the highways department in 1980. As this 60 metre-long causeway is totally damaged, it would cost Rs.30 lakh to repair it temporarily. For constructing it permanently, it would require Rs.2.2 crore. Proposal and estimate in this regard would be sent to the State government soon.
When he inspected the culvert on the Sutthamalli-Vadakkal Road, T. Pazhur union, he found it seriously affected. This culvert was constructed at a cost of Rs. 24.72 lakh during 2010-11 under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana. While it would cost Rs.70 lakh to repair the culvert, the repairing of the road in total would require over over Rs.1 crore. Later, the Collector inspected the rain-ravaged banana orchards at Kasankottai panchayat in T. Pazhur panchayat union and promised the affected farmers that he would try to get them compensation. Those who accompanied the Collector included Kasturi, Revenue Divisional Officer, Udayarpalayam.
Karur
The sky remained overcast and cloudy on Thursday with the sun never coming out all through the day. There was no rainfall during the day.
Widespread rain was reported in almost all major centres in the district during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Aravakurichi and Anaipalayam registered 75 mm each as Karur district recorded 605.70 mm rainfall during the period. The chief quantum of rainfall (in mm) recorded in major centres are Aravakurichi and Anaipalayam 75, Karur town 62.2, K. Paramathi 54.2, Panjapatti 52, Krishnarayapuram 50, Mylampatti 49.2, Mayanur 48, Thogamalai 45, Kulithalai 36.30, Palaviduthi 32.2, and Kadavur 26.6 mm.
