The icing on the cake of Tiruchi district’s overall pass percentage of 93.78 percentage in plus two is the cent per cent results secured by eight government higher secondary schools.
They comprise the schools at Kolakkudi, Moovanur, Kallagam, Pudurpalayam, Poongudi, Thiruchendurai, and Marungapuri, besides the only Corporation Higher Secondary School at Keelaransalai.
Education Department officials believe that the system of adoption of weak students by teachers for mentoring and a similar approach followed by the officials to see through the performance of schools with track record of poor performance has fetched the desired results.
Officials reviewed the half-yearly performance of schools individually and set targets for the headmasters. The progress was monitored at every meeting of headmasters, and they were particularly asked to report about the performance of those teachers under whose care academically weak students were entrusted.
On an average, five weak students were put under the care of one teacher in government schools. The department kept a constant tab on the level of commitment of the teachers during the revision exams. Alongside, the department also arranged for refresher training by roping in experienced college teachers.
On their part, the officials also adopted schools. The District Educational Officers in the educational districts of Tiruchi, Lalgudi, and Musiri adopted five schools each. The Chief Educational Officer adopted the government higher secondary schools in Valanadu, Pannankombu, Thavalaiveeranpatti, Thuvankurichi, and Kovilpatti. Below average students were provided with study materials for the purpose of enhancing the district’s overall pass percentage. The contents were prepared by a group of senior teachers.
In many schools, a phenomenal transformation could be witnessed, the Chief Educational Officer K. Selvakumar said, citing the instances of the performance of Government Higher Secondary Schools at Kallagam and Valanadu where the results used to be poor . While the Kallagam School has secured cent per cent pass with all the 26 studentsemerging successful , at the Government HSS Valanadu, 83 out of 89 students have secured pass marks, accounting for over 93 per cent pass. In fact, some of the government schools missed cent percent by a whisker. At Government Girls’ HSS, Mannachanallur, as many as 519 students appeared for the public examination and its pass percentage was 99.81 since only one student had failed. Likewise, there was just one failure out of 114 candidates in Government HSS, Thottiyam, due to which the pass percentage was 99.12. Similarly, the Government HSS at Valasiramani secured 98.81 pass percentage as one of the 84 students had failed.
