The Regional Transport Office has issued a slew of directives to ensure road safety of vehicles engaged by educational institutions here in the district.
Directives have been issued to drivers to refrain from road safety violations. Licences will be cancelled for reckless driving, over speeding and drunken driving; and those vehicles unauthorized to ferry school children and yet indulging in stacking of students shall be seized summarily.
Drivers are forbidden from use of cell phones on duty, and every vehicle engaged by educational institutions shall function with a conductor.
Further, over speeding shall be penalised and all vehicles shall be equipped with speed control meters.
No institution bus or other authorised, hired vehicles shall carry students over and above the permissible capacity.
Vehicles of educational institutions were subject to two-day long inspections here in the district this weekend, and vetted for safety mechanisms in place.
Safety gadgets
Vehicles were inspected for safety gadgets including speed-controllers, and first aid box; and validity of papers including certificate of registration, vehicular license, certificate of taxation, insurance, and driver's license.
Over 81 buses and 242 vans were test-driven during the course of inspections.
Administrations of schools and colleges have been directed to carry vehicular overhauling at regular intervals in order to ensure safety of students.
