Tamil Nadu is a frontrunner in generating employment opportunities for unemployed youth hailing from economically weaker sections, said S.P.Velumani, Minister for Law.

Speaking at the end of a special camp organised under the auspices of the Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation – Mahalir Thittam and Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission here on Monday, he spoke on various schemes being implemented by the State government. Tamil Nadu attracted a large number of investors due to the availability of basic amenities. A number of light and heavy industries were being started across the State, he said.

Lack of awareness among rural youth on enhancing their employability skill, however, was a challenge, he said. The State government’s Pudhu Vazhvu scheme had come as a boon to the youth, he said. As many as 2, 63,811 persons, who had undergone skill development training since the inception of the Pudhu Vazhvu scheme, have been placed. During the course of the day-long camp organised on February 24 across the State, 83,656 persons have received appointment orders.

He said that 33 Rural Poverty Reduction Groups have been formed during the second phase of the programme in the district, and gave away cheques totalling Rs. 1.15 crore at the rate of Rs. 3.50 lakh per group. The minister distributed appointment orders to 600 unemployed youths on the occasion. This apart, 599 persons got assistance totalling Rs.3.02 crore. This apart, women members of 60 self-help groups have been extended credit linkages with banks, and loans totalling Rs.1.28 crore have been released.

T.P.Poonachi, Minister for Khadi and Rural Industries, R.Manoharan, Chief Whip, and K.S.Palanisamy, District Collector, spoke.
