Stage set for ITF tennis tournament

It’s time for tennis action in the city as the main draw of the Vasan Eye Care - ITF (International Tennis Federation) men’s futures tennis tournament begins at the Union Club here on Monday.

The tournament being organised by the Tiruchi District Tennis Association (TDTA) will feature singles and doubles events. It has attracted players from India and other countries. The two-day qualifying round for the singles event began on Saturday.

“It is important to conduct international tournaments in cities such as Tiruchi, as it would help in promoting the sport and inspire more youngsters to take up tennis,” said Karthi P. Chidambaram, vice-president, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), after inaugurating the event here. He said that in all eight or nine ITF futures tennis tournament for men and women would be held in Tamil Nadu this year.

K. Neethi, president, TDTA, said this was the second successive time that Tiruchi was hosting an ITF tournament exuding hope that fans would turn up in large numbers. “There will be no entry fee,” he added.

Rajiv Naidu, treasurer, TNTA, S. Viswanthan, secretary, TDTA, K. Pari, president, Union Club, and PL. Muthiah, secretary of the club, took part in the inaugural function.
