“Sports helps in understanding and appreciating different cultures”

Winning does matter, but the spirit of participation is what matters the most, D. Devaraj, Regional Executive Director, Southern Region, Airports Authority of India (AAI), said.

Speaking at the valediction of the all-India AAI chess and carrom tournament here on Sunday, he said that the tourney provided an opportunity for the participants to showcase their skills. “Such events help in promoting a sense of team sprit among the employees.

Taking part in chess and carrom competition will improve concentration at work,” he added.

Rupesh Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), observed that sports events will create an atmosphere of cordiality among employees and also bridge communication gap. “It also plays a role in improving efficiency of the employees.”

E.P. Hareendranath, Airport Director, Chennai International Airport, felt that the tournament provided a chance for the participants to understand and appreciate different cultures.

The six-day tournament, which was organised by the Southern Region Sports Control Board (SRSCB) of AAI Tiruchi Airport, featured participants from six zones – North, West, South, East, Central and North East.

Mr. Meena gave away the prizes in the presence of S. Dharmaraj, Airport Controller, Tiruchi Airport, M.K. Ghoshal, All-India General Secretary, Airports Authority Employees Union, and M. Ramesh Yadav, Regional Secretary, SRSCB.

The winners of the various events are

Chess:

Men: Individual: M.S. Menon (West zone); Team event: North East zone.

Women: Individual: Hema Konwar (North East zone); Team event: North East zone.

Carrom:

Men: Singles: Subhash Arote (West zone); Doubles: M. Praveen & K. Rajendran (South zone); Team: West zone.

Women: Singles: Anjana Bhowmik (North East zone); Doubles: S.S. Savale & S. Mini (West zone); Team: North East zone.
