Sporadic incidents in delta region

Pattali Makkal Katchi founder leader S. Ramadoss was brought to the Tiruchi Central Prison at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

Over 360 partymen who were arrested in Villupuram on Tuesday along with Dr. Ramadoss, PMK president G.K. Mani, A. Ganesh Kumar, MLA, and K. Dhanraj, former MP, have been lodged in the central prison here.

Thanjavur Special Correspondent adds:

Sixty PMK men were arrested in Thanjavur district, mostly in Kumbakonam area on Wednesday, on charges of throwing stones and picketing buses to protest against the arrest of Dr. Ramadoss.

The arrests were made in Papanasam, Kumbakonam, Thiruvidaimaruthur, Thirupanandal areas. One TNSTC bus proceeding to Jayankondam from Kumbakonam was stoned at Kovilachery and anther private bus coming to Thanjavur from Kumbakonam was stoned at Thiruvalanchuzhi.

On Wednesday, police took 15 PMK cadre, including the State deputy general secretary G. Alayamani, into preventive custody.

PMK cadre staged demonstration in front of the collectorate at Karaikal on Wednesday condemning the arrest of Dr. Ramadoss. District secretary Devamani led the agitation.

Meanwhile, the police have secured 12 persons in two separate incidents of vandalism purported by agitated PMK cadres in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday. The arrested PMK cadres had vandalised two buses in Mayiladuthurai by throwing stones damaging windowpanes, on Tuesday night. Similar, vandalism of two buses was reported from Sirkazhi, on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police Radhakrishnan said these were stray incidents and six persons each had been arrested in the two incidents.

Special Correspondent adds from Ariyalur:

A total of 178 PMK men were arrested by the police on Tuesday night and on Wednesday for staging demonstration in defiance of police orders in Ariyalur district. The PMK cadre attempted to stage agitation in Ariyalur, Jayamkondam and Senthurai towns last night and police arrested 79 persons, including Vaithi, PMK Ariyalur district secretary, U. Samidurai, State vice-president.

All the shops remained close in Meensurutti town on Wednesday.
