A 30 day training in spoken English to the autorickshaw drivers was inaugurated on Wednesday by the District Collector, M. S. Shanmugham as part of tourism promotion in Thanjavur.

The Collector said that autorickshaw drivers are the first persons met by foreign and north Indian tourists when they come to Thanjavur. If they know spoken English, they can communicate easily with these tourists and guide them properly. This will give a good impression about Thanjavur to the tourists.

Tourism department has organised this training programme for the drivers as part of its capacity building programme. The Collector advised auto drivers to print visiting cards in English and distribute to the tourists when they come. Tourists can have their address and use them for their future needs. English professors from Rajah Serfoji Government College will give the training to the autorickshaw drivers. Tourist friendly autorickshaws will also be introduced in Thanjavur.

According to Tourist officer Ilangovan, 45 autorickshaw drivers are given training in the first phase. Prof. L. Chellappa, Principal of Rajah Serfoji Government College, Prof. P. Gopalakrishnan, Head of the department of English, G.Shanmugham, Controller of examinations, S.Muthukumar, Honorary president of Tamil Nadu Tourist Guides Association participated in the meeting.
