Volleyball players of the district have a reason to rejoice. The new volleyball court at Anna Stadium here, equipped with floodlights, was declared open on Sunday. The facility established at a cost of Rs.10 lakh was sponsored by Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited (DCBL), Dalmiapuram unit.
“The gesture is indeed commendable as volleyball attracts a good number of youngsters from the rural parts,” said W.I. Dawaram, former Director General of Police, after inaugurating the floodlit volleyball court.
Maintenance
J.V. Gungune, Executive Director, DCBL, Dalmiapuram unit, said that the maintenance aspect would also be taken care of. Besides, the DCBL will sponsor a State-level inter-school volleyball tournament annually, starting next year.
The facility, according to P. Kalaiselvan, District Sports Officer, will enable players to practice late in the evening. “It is also important for young spikers to get used to floodlights under which most of the volleyball tournaments are played these days,” he said.
Thanga. Pichayappa, secretary, Tiruchi District Volleyball Association, observed that such facilities would draw more volleyball aspirants.
Exhibition matches were a part of the inaugural function.
In the men's match, Tiruchi Sports Hostel took on Central Zone Police, while in the women's section, the encounter was between PKR Arts College for Women, Erode and St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Salem.
