A special team of the City Police which was constituted to probe the series of chain snatchings reported across the city recently arrested two youth and recovered gold jewellery weighing 56.5 sovereigns from them.
A slew of chain snatching offences was reported at Woraiyur, Srirangam, Thillai Nagar, Gandhi Market, Cantonment, and Airport police station limits. In one such instance, the culprits snatched gold chain from the wife of a police officer near the district court complex recently.
Consequent to a series of such offences and to check chain snatchings, a special team was constituted on the order of the Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur to probe the cases.
The team was conducting vehicle checks at 80 feet road when it stopped two youth – R. Deivendran (19) and J. Mohammed Mukthar (19) – who came on a motorcycle.
As the two did not stop the vehicle and attempted to escape, the police personnel forcibly stopped them and held enquiries with the two. During enquiry, the two confessed that they had snatched gold chains from women and elders during morning and evening hours, a police press release here said.
Gold jewellery weighing 56.5 sovereigns connected with in 11 cases were recovered from them. The accused were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
