Release of special covers on Rajan Bungalow and Gandhi Market, and quiz competition on philately formed part of the two-day district-level philatelic exhibition “Rockpex 2015’ inaugurated at Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School here on Friday.
A note on the special cover on Rajan Bungalow referred to the late T.S.S.Rajan’s patriotism and active participation in the non-cooperation movement.
The cover on Gandhi Market was released to highlight the association of the market with historic occasions.
The special covers were released by J.T.Venkateswarlu, Postmaster General, Central Region, Tamil Nadu, and were received by S.Krishnamoorthy, General Manager (Commercial, Marketing, Proposal and logistics), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, and Sivasakthi Ramanathan, Tiruchi president of the Tamil Nadu Merchants Association.
Mr.Venkateswarlu said that both the Rajan Bungalow and the Gandhi Market were historically important places of the city.
While the late Rajan used to discuss with the Father of Nation the course of the independence movement at the bungalow, Gandhi Market was the second largest market in south India.
The late Rajaji had declared open the market in 1940. On modernisation of postal services, he said that automated teller machines would be installed at 20 head post offices and four sub-offices.
G.Rajendran, Deputy General Manager, Canara Bank, Circle Office, underlined the role of philatelic bureau.
Rev.Daniel Vincent, president, Tiruchi Philatelic Club, said that the club had sponsored the special cover on Rajan Bungalow as a mark of tribute to the Father of Nation.
The philatelic exhibition provided an opportunity to the visitors to understand the ancient history of not only our country but also Sri Lanka.
The exhibits included an array of stamps, post cards, inland letters, postal envelopes, and special covers. Schematic exhibits on Gandhiji, Christianity and special covers on Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School and Sri Lankan stamps also formed part of the exhibits.
