A special plan for the removal of Neyveli Kattamani weeds will be taken up on the Sozha Soodamani riverbed to a length of two kms under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The clearing of the weeds will help free flow of water and benefit the ayacutdars, said S. Natarajan, District Collector, while addressing the gram sabha meeting at Manapparavai village in Kodavasal union on Sunday.
The Collector said that the district administration has given priority for sinking borewell in the dry riverbed to rejuvenate groundwater table.
He appealed to the villagers to utilise Rs. 17 lakh sanctioned under the Tamil Nadu Rural Livelihood Mission for the village panchayat.
Listing out various schemes to be implemented in the village, Mr. Natarajan said that a sum of Rs. 39.08 lakhs had been allotted for providing basic amenities that includes drinking water supply, laying roads, and to repair and maintain pathways to the burial grounds.
Explaining the hazards of plastic, the Collector appealed to the villagers to segregate degradable and non-degradable solid waste before disposal.
The plastic waste segregated should be sent to the recycling unit at Thandalai village panchayat.

THANJAVUR: N. Subbaiyan, District Collector, observed the proceedings of gram sabha meeting at Pillaiyarpatti panchayat. He underlined the need for enrolling all the eligible children to schools.
Focus should be on enrolling new wards, he said explaining the role of village panchayats towards achieving cent per cent enrolment.
On the disaster management front, in the wake of South West monsoon, the Collector advised the panchayat heads to make all arrangements to meet any emergency.
Referring to the proposed army recruitment in Thanjavur, form June 11-18, he urged the youths who had cleared Plus Two examinations to take advantage of the recruitment drive and serve the country.

KARUR: The District Collector S. Jayandhi appealed to the members of the gram sabha of Sinna Dharapuram panchayat to identify open borewells which were in disuse and close them to avert any mishap.
She also advised the villages to ensure proper maintenance of solar lamps. Kalaiyarasi Ravi, panchayat president, presided.
