Southern Railways: Salem-Karur line to be electrified

Southern railway has plotted an electrification plan for the recently-commissioned Salem-Karur broad gauge section.

The plan has been forwarded to the railway board for consideration, said the Southern Railway General Manager, Rakesh Mishra.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the Karur junction on Friday, Mr.Mishra said electrification of the track would become a reality in five or six years. He expressed satisfaction at the completion of infrastructure and facilities in the section including those at the new stations en route.

Pointing out that the first express train service on the section, the Chennai-Palani-Chennai express was being operated for the past few days, Mr.Mishra discounted the possibility of any diversion of passenger services.

On operating new passenger services, Mr.Mishra reminded that if the people’s demand were to be echoed by the elected representatives in the railway ministry and reflected in the railway budget. He was replying to queries on running Madurai-Salem-Bangalore Shatabdi Express.
