Value of software exports from Tiruchi region will increase several-fold from the existing level of Rs. 26.21 crore per year, the Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said after inaugurating the IT Park of ELCOT at Navalpattu here on Thursday.

Mr. Stalin attributed Tamil Nadu's rise to occupy the second position in the country in software and hardware exports to the comprehensive IT policy devised by the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in 1996 during the DMK's previous stint.

Importance of SHGs

Likewise, the growth of SHGs in Tamil Nadu has been perceptible after the Chief Minister transferred the subject to Ministry of Local Bodies and Rural Development from the Ministry of Social Welfare.

Mr. Stalin said his eagerness to hand over the benefits by himself to each of the several thousands of SHGs reflected the importance the government attached to their welfare.

Handing over the revolving fund to all the 1011 SHGs on the occasion, he said that having fulfilled all its poll promises the DMK was now implementing new projects such as Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments and Kalaignar Housing Scheme with the objective of reaching out to all irrespective of party affiliations. Taking a dig at the parties that opposed the Kalaignar Housing Scheme, he pointed out that the beneficiaries of the two new houses he earlier inaugurated under the scheme at Kandalur village belonged to the AIADMK.

The DMK would come to power again in 2011 and ensure implementation of the Kalaignar Housing Scheme envisaged to benefit 21 lakh hut-dwellers by 2016, Mr. Stalin said.

Welfare assistance

A total of 3,631 beneficiaries received welfare assistance worth Rs.12.88 crore under various government schemes during the function.

IT Secretary P.W.C. Davidar said that the IT-cum-administrative building at Navalpattu was completed in one year and two months' time. Companies establishing their units in the IT park would source local talent, he said. The Managing Director of ELCOT Santhosh Babu said that the IT Park would usher in significant economic growth similar to the development brought about by BHEL.

State Ministers K.N. Nehru, Poongothai Aladi Aruna and S. Selvaraj, K.N.Sekaran, MLA, Tiruverambur and others were present.
