A rally and meeting marked the conclusion of national energy conservation week observation by Tangedco in Tiruchi on Friday.

The awareness week is organised from December 16 to 20 every year to educate users on the importance of energy conservation and create awareness, said R.Kumaresan, Chief Engineer-Distribution, Tangedco.

“There is tremendous loss of energy while generating and utilising electricity. If we continue using electricity at this rate, none will be left for the future generations, he said, while speaking at the event. “Small-scale industries do not employ proper energy audit practices. In the current scenario of large scale energy scarcity, it is essential that everyone employs energy conservation measures with full force,” said Karuthaiah Pandian, director, Bharathidasan Institute of Management.

Mr. Nandalala of Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artistes Association enthralled the audience with interesting and humorous anecdotes that were thought provoking as well.

“The selfish nature of individuals today is responsible for many problems faced by the society as a whole. Most of the lifestyle changes that have taken place over the past few years are detrimental to nature,” he said while musing at how life has changed over the past decade. “From birth to death, we are dependent on electricity in various forms. We use incubators for premature infants and incinerators for electric cremation of our dead. Therefore conservation of electricity is of primary importance,” Mr. Nandalala said. A skit on the importance of energy conservation was staged by employees of the corporation. Prizes were distributed to students who came up with the best entries in various competitions organised during the observance.
