Sky is the limit for him

May 24, 2014 01:09 pm | Updated 01:09 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Students of the corporation schools in Tiruchi have put up a good performance in the SSLC public exams, achieving an overall pass percentage of 95.44.

Of the 243 students from eight corporation schools who appeared for the exam, 232 have passed. Many of the students from humble backgrounds from these schools have overcome odds to score good marks.

Hogging the limelight was the Corporation High School at Rani Annadurai Street in K.K. Nagar, which has produced the top three rank holders among the corporation schools.

M. Syed Hussain of the school secured the top position with 492 marks with a centum in Science, 99 each in Mathematics, and Social Science and 97 each in Tamil and English.

Hailing from a poor family of separated parents, Hussain has been supported by his mother Shakeela, who works as an aide in a physiotherapy clinic, and his grandmother Dawood Bi, who rolls beedis. “I wish to become a pilot and I will study hard to achieve the dream,” says Hussain. His grandmother, Dawood Bi, who supports two of the three children in the family, though proud of his grandson, has little clue how to go about funding his higher education. “He is a studious boy and we have to raise loans somehow to finance his studies,” she says.

According to the school authorities, Hussain is the topper among the 44 schools upgraded under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, a Centrally-sponsored national mission for secondary education, in Tiruchi district. The school was upgraded in 2011 and had achieved cent per cent pass in the first SSLC batch last year. This year, one of its 37 students has failed and the pass percentage slipped to 97.29.

K.P. Aishwarya of the school stood second among students of corporation schools with a tally of 481 marks and A. Rahmatunisha stood third with a score of 471 marks.

Two Corporation schools, Ayyanar Corporation High School at Melur Keezha Theru in Srirangam and Corporation High School at Pary Street in Senthaneerpuram have achieved cent per cent pass.

Among the other corporation schools, the Corporation High School at Melakalkandarkottai recorded 97.43 per cent pass; the Corporation High School at Kasithoppu, Thiruvanaikovil, 95.23 per cent; Corporation High School, Kamaraj Nagar, 92 per cent; Dr.Madhuram Corporation Higher Secondary School, East Boulevard Road, 91 per cent; Corporation High School, Melatheru, Thiruvalarsolai, 90.62 per cent.
