Six college students arrested for ragging

Six undergraduate students of Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, were arrested under the Prohibition of Ragging Act.

Four second-year students Ganesan, Babu, Sakthivel and Prabu and two third-year students Balaji and Kalyanasundaram had caused mental and physical harassment to the complainant, Dinesh Kumar, a first-year student of Physics department, in the hostel, according to the first information report registered by the Pulivalam police.

On Tuesday night, the seniors had beaten up Dinesh Kumar, inflicting external injuries, due to which he had to be admitted to the hospital. On Wednesday, a five-member committee of teachers carried out a thorough inquiry.

Based on the report submitted by the committee, the Principal, K. Ramasami, sent the senior students out of the institution, by issuing transfer certificates.

The six students were remanded to judicial custody .
