Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized seven kg of gold bars and biscuits smuggled in by a passenger from Singapore at the international airport here on Friday night.

On suspicion, a team of officials checked the belongings of Nawaz Khan (24) of Thondi soon after the arrival of Tiger Airways from Singapore. They found gold bars and biscuits in a handbag.

When the officials quizzed him, he reportedly confessed that he smuggled the gold bars with the knowledge of a health worker in the airport, who had promised to help him smuggle out the gold from the airport. Following this, the health worker was also detained for inquiry.

Further interrogation revealed that Khan had smuggled seven kg of gold when he travelled from Singapore to Tiruchi on April 13 also.
