Good parenting is considered a major determining factor in shaping the wellbeing of children and their career. Cultural and lifestyle changes have had their impact and many parents, who work tirelessly for the future of their wards, are oblivious to good parenting. This was the focus of an open panel session on healthy parenting organised by the Campion Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School here on Saturday.

A large number of parents took part in the programme which provided valuable tips on nurturing children. Sessions were held for parents of teenaged students of the school.

Rev. Wilson, Director, Anugraha, Centre for Counselling and Guidance, and Rev. Lawrence, Anugraha, Institute of Social Sciences, Dindigul, were the resource persons. They delved extensively on quarrels among parents, its impact on the children’s studies, performance, examinations, behaviour and their overall wellbeing. The resource persons listed dos and don’ts on various aspects of parenting with case studies.

“The country has undergone a big cultural change owing to media and social media explosion, virtually replacing parents and causing enormous changes in the parental dynamics. It needs to be addressed properly,” Rev. Wilson said.

Many parents quarrelled frequently on various issues. Broken relationships would impact the overall growth of children. It was a serious issue confronted by the society. The State and Central governments had a greater role to play in building a healthy society. A national policy should be framed by forming a panel with experts on good parenting, he said.

Bro. S. Soosairaj, Principal, Campion School, said the programme was conducted with the aim of producing morally and physically good students. Parents were facing extreme pressure on various aspects of parenting. The initiative would address the issues to some extent, he said.
