A lecture on haematological disorders (diseases of blood) by K.Krishna Rathinam, head of the department of Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai, marked the CME (Continuing Medical Education) programme organised by the Tiruchi branch of IMA (Indian Medical Association) at Sangam hotel in Tiruchi on Sunday.
Speaking on the topic ‘Haematology disorders in day to day practice’, Dr.Rathinam advised IMA members on what to look for while treating anaemia.
He shared his experiences on how to diagnose anaemia, elaborated about the different kinds of anaemia, their causes and the methods of treatment as well as the optimal drug doses for them.
“Once you know that too many drugs are not required to treat the problems, you can prescribe only the required drugs to the patients,” he said. Discussing about the current problem of low platelet count in many patients, he advised doctors to treat them based on the symptoms and said that there was no reason to get alarmed. Dr.Rathinam also shared his thoughts on the methods to differentiate between types of haematological disorders and ways to treat them effectively.
Dr.V.Ravichandran, a physician from a speciality hospital in the city presented two case studies from his experience of treating patients. He spoke on how he diagnosed the problem and methods of treatment. “Such CMEs help doctors revisit the basics that we studied in medical college. These reinforcements help instil confidence that we have mastered all the basics and we can treat patients accurately,” said Dr.K.N.Srinivasan, a nuclear medicine physician who attended the programme.
