Security beefed up for idol processions today

An elaborate security scheme has been drawn by the city police to ensure law and order during the Vinayakar idols procession slated here for Monday. A total of 148 idols have been installed in various places within the city limit which would be taken out in a procession from the respective places and immersed in the Cauvery river.

Police sources said over 1,000 policemen and officers would be deployed at various places in the city during the processions. Personnel from the Armed Reserve, Tamil Nadu Special Police and Home Guards have also been drafted.The sources said police personnel, who had already been deployed for the idols installed at various places, would move along with the processions to the immersion point.

City Police authorities have permitted certain routes for the idols to be taken out in a procession. A police press release here said idols from Cantonment, E. Pudur and K.K. Nagar areas would be taken out in a procession via Melapudur, Palakkarai road over bridge, Prabhat junction, Gandhi Market arch, Big Bazaar street, Nandhikoil street and Chinthamani to reach the Cauvery river.

Idols from Airport area, Ponmalai and Ariyamangalam would be brought via Palpannai, Thanjavur road, Dharbarmedu, Gandhi Market arch, Big Bazaar street, Nandhikoil street and Chinthamani Anna statue. Idols from Woraiyur areas would be brought through Salai Road, Karur By Pass Road and Chathram bus stand to reach Cauvery river.

Idols from Thillai Nagar area would proceed through Thillai Nagar main road, K.T. Junction and Karur By Pass Road to reach the immersion point.

Those from Amma Mandapam areas would be brought via Chithirai veedhi, Gandhi Road, Tiruvanaikoil main road and Mambazha Salai to reach Cauvery river.
