The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has decided to stage a black flag demonstration during the visit of Gujarat Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to Tiruchi on September 26.
The SDPI will stage the demonstration near the TVS Tollgate to express its opposition to Mr. Modi’s visit to the State, its state general secretary Abdul Hameed said on Tuesday.
The party would seek support from political parties and organisations, which had faith in democracy, for its proposed demonstration, Mr. Hameed told presspersons here.
Stating that every organisation in the country had the right to express its protest, Mr. Hameed alleged that the “transgressions” of the police in connection with Mr. Modi’s visit questioned the very strength of democracy.
He alleged that the plainclothesmen went to the residences and offices of SDPI members in Tiruchi and other districts and informed them of their arrest as a preventive measure in connection with Mr. Modi’s visit.
Expressing regret over what he claimed as the “threat” by the police, Mr. Hameed said Tamil Nadu had remained a haven of peace even when the northern parts of the country were rocked by communal riots in the past.
The SDPI had stuck posters across the State against Mr. Modi’s visit, he said and added that it would circulate pamphlets to the public here on the eve of his visit.
