Karaikal will be declared as ‘open-defecation-free’ district by October 2 and all efforts are being taken to achieve the goal. All commune panchayat officials have been asked to identify the houses without individual toilets and a survey is being taken. The construction of individual toilets is being executed in joint coordination with the Panchayat-level federations, State Rural Livelihood Mission and the commune panchayats, said R. Kesavan, Sub-Collector.

Inaugurating the work on the construction of individual toilets at Kurubagaram and Ponpethi near Nedungadu in the district on Monday, he said that a subsidy of ₹ 20,000 would be released to the beneficiaries. He called upon the villagers to make the most of this scheme.

K. Revathy, BDO, said that 80 toilets would be constructed in these villages. The work would be completed within a month’s time.
