Sarubala Tondaiman hits campaign trail

She has been nominated as the Congress candidate for Tiruchi constituency for the second consecutive time

Sarubala R. Tondaiman, who has been nominated as the Congress candidate for Tiruchi constituency for the second consecutive time, launched her campaign on Friday.

Ms. Tondaiman, a member of the Pudukottai royal family, is the State vice president of the party.

She launched the campaign after garlanding the statues of Nehru, Periyar, Ambedkar, Kamaraj, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, freedom fighter Arunachalam and L.Adaikkalaraj in different parts of the city.

G. Jerome Arokiaraj, president of the urban district unit of the Congress, R. Babu, south district president, S. Sujatha, State vice president, and Joseph Louis, executive committee member, were present.

Later Ms. Tondaiman sought the support of the voters in the city. Ms. Tondaiman was pitted against the AIADMK’s P. Kumar in the 2009 elections and she lost by a slender margin of a little over 4,000 votes. She was a two-time Mayor and quit her post midway during her second tenure in 2009 to contest the Lok Sabha election.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jerome Arokiaraj,thanked the party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi for nominating Ms. Tondaiman for the seat.
