Sanitation in government hospitals has come under scanner in the wake of an incident in Chennai government hospital where a dead baby’s cheek was reportedly bitten off by rodents.
Mahatma Gandhi Government hospital attached to K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College, along with city corporation health officials has deputed workers to capture rodents in the wards, A.Karthikeyan, dean, told The Hindu .
Vendors and hawkers who peddle their wares on the pavements in front of the hospital have been asked to vacate.
The entrance to the hospital now sports a clean look. The sale of eateries and unhygienic food has come under scrutiny.
Only small stalls selling tea and snacks have been permitted to function.
Stray cows and dogs have been spotted and removed off the campus regularly for the last six months, said Dr.Karthikeyan.
While acknowledging that sanitation would get priority, steps are taken to ensure that no stray animal enters the campus of hospitals, said Mohanasundaram, Joint Director, Health Services.
Though officials have taken steps to enhance sanitation and safety at the government medical college hospital, the fact that the hospital has both gates unhinged, leaving the entrance wide open to stray animals is a matter for concern.
Public Works Department has been entrusted with putting up new gates, said Dr.Karthikeyan.
