Members of Tiruchi district branch of sand cart workers association staged a demonstration on Monday urging the district administration to allow lifting of sand by bullock carts from government sand quarries in Cauvery and Coleroon rivers.

The demonstration held near the Collectorate was led by the CITU district secretary Raja.

The association said that livelihood of workers was at stake due to the refusal of permission to quarry sand by bullock cart workers.

Following repeated demands by the association, the district administration had allowed cart workers to lift sand by bullock carts from the quarry at Thottiyam and Manalmedu recently.

While thanking the Collector for according permission, the association has urged the administration to allow lifting of sand by bullock carts from other quarries at Sirugamani, Kondayampettai, and Kilikoodu areas.
