Having filled 946 vacancies at entry level under Right To Education Act in private institutions, the School Education Department is now into the process of filling the remaining 760 vacancies through online process.
The online process that began on July 3 will culminate on July 26. This year, the RTE admissions are being made to the mandatory 25 % of seats at entry level in 111 schools across the district. The number of schools identified for RTE admissions were 106 during 2015-16 and 108 during 2016-17, according to official figures.
Though seat allotments for the children from economically backward background need to be made on the basis of proximity of schools in the neighbourhood, there have been instances of parents choosing schools located farther. In such cases, parents had to be apprised about the rules and were made to see reason, Inspector of Matriculation Schools C. Vimala said.
In urban areas, a municipal ward constitutes the neighbourhood, and in rural parts, one km from a habitation or village constitutes neighbourhood. Parents can seek admission for their children outside their ward only in the absence of an unaided school in their neighbourhood. Seat allotment process requires intense attention since a parent could choose five schools in the order of preference. In the second round of seat allotment, the 760 admissions have to be made in 86 schools.
The extent of tuition fee waived for this category of students in the private schools is reimbursed by the Government. In Tiruchi district, the department has completed the process of reimbursing ₹ 1.72 crore to 106 schools for 2015-16. For 2016-17, the settlement of ₹ 2.72 crore would be made in due course. The proposal has already been forwarded to the government, Ms. Vimala said.
