Rs. 80 lakh sanctioned for govt. law college

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs. 80 lakh for construction of additional infrastructure to the Government Law College here, according to J. Vincent Comraj, principal of the college.

Mr. Comraj told The Hindu that a building with a waiting hall would be constructed using the allocation. A women’s hostel would be built. There are 120 girl students in the college. Out of them hostel facility would be provided only for unmarried girls.

The State government had sanctioned Rs. 15 lakh for construction of a multipurpose hall. Another Rs. 15 lakh had been sanctioned for solar energy. The library at the law college was a fully automated one with browsing and wi-fi connection.

“Everything is computerised in the library. Books taken, name of the student who took the books and bar code will be entered into computers,” Mr. Comraj said.

The college had been planning to conduct a national seminar on intellectual property rights.

“We have written to the UGC for fund to conduct the seminar,” the Principal said. A workshop for NSS programme officers would be held at the college.

“Dr. Ambedkar Law University is conducting the workshop at our college,” Mr. Comraj said. There were 1,200 students in the college. “Every year, 380 students pass out of the college. The college has been functioning for 35 years. The college was started in 1979,” Mr. Comraj added.
