A reunion of alumni and cultural programmes will mark the centenary celebration of the main building of the Higher Secondary School for Boys, Srirangam, today.
‘The High School’ at Srirangam was established in 1895-96 by R. Veeraraghavachariar, a teacher. It was turned into a co-education school in 1920 and functioning that way till 1946. The school is managed by the Srirangam Educational Society (SES), which manages seven schools in Srirangam.
At present, the school has strength of 2,300 students and six buildings in all, according to R. Chandrasekhar, headmaster. Prominent alumni of the school include R. Sujatha, writer; Vaali, poet and lyricist; G. Ramanujam, former Governor of Goa; educationists, and businessmen.
The school has completed 115 years of existence and the main building has been in place for 100 years. The foundation stone for the main building was laid on August 27, 1911. On May 3, 1914, the ground floor of the building was inaugurated. The building initially housed a library and 14 classrooms.
The main building has been recently renovated at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh, according to M.S. Nandakumar, secretary, SES.
Mr. Nanadakumar said that all the alumni were invited for the function and donations were welcome. He added that a few alumni above the age of 90 were expected to attend the event and that descendents of the first five headmasters would be honoured.
