Irked over irregular supply of drinking water in the 35th ward here, a group of residents from various localities staged a road roko on Tiruchi – Pudukottai national highway on Wednesday.

Around 200 residents, mostly women, residing at Kamaraj Nagar, Bharathi Nagar, Bharathi Nagar extension, Thilagar street and Vasanth Nagar resorted to road roko with empty pots opposite the airport.

The agitation led to traffic hold up.

The residents were led by the Democratic Youth Federation of India district secretary Lenin. He said drinking water supply to certain residential localities in the 35th ward had been irregular for over four months now. Although representations were given to officials the situation persisted. Corporation officials who landed at the spot held talks with the residents stating that there were some blocks in pipes which would be cleared soon.

They assured to sink a new borewell besides promising to repair a few hand pumps installed in the ward. The residents wanted the problem to be rectified soon and asked the civic body to make arrangements for supply of water through pipes rather than being supplied by lorries. Following assurances, they dispersed.
