In continuing opposition to TASMAC retail outlets across the state, residents protested opening of a liqour shop at Ullikkottai near Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district, alleging that it was close to a government medical facility. They staged a fast to give vent to their feelings.

Already, 80 out of the total 127 TASMAC retail outlets in the district have pulled down their shutters following a Supreme Court ruling. Officials in Thanjavur district found themselves at the receiving end of public ire while scouting for a new place to relocate a TASMAC shop.

Villagers of Ayyampettai Kurinji Nagar staged a demonstration at the venue, alleging that the shop could not be opened in a residential locality.

The TASMAC shop would cause disturbance the peace and tranquility, the villagers of Ayyampettai said.
