Tiruchi city and other parts of the district experienced sharp showers for about an hour in the evening on Thursday.

The rainfall, accompanied by thunder and strong winds, gave a welcome respite to the people suffering from the sweltering heat over the past couple of months.

Due to the sharp showers, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa could not visit the Thayar and Chakarathazhvar sannidhis during her visit to Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam.

Many low-lying areas near Palpannai, Gandhi market, Palakkarai were water-logged.

The sky remained overcast for a major part of the afternoon. A few coconut trees were uprooted near Manapparai. Thanjavur town too received heavy showers for an hour on Thursday evening. Agriculture department officials said that the rain was good for summer ploughing.

Pudukottai town and its suburbs too experienced moderate showers for about an hour in the evening. Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts too received rainfall.
