Records galore at Tiruchi district athletic championship

Meet organised by the Tiruchi District Athletic Association, attracted over 2,000 participants

Records fell like ninepins during the two-day Tiruchi district athletic championship at the Golden Rock railway ground here.

As many as 18 new marks were set at the meet, which concluded on Sunday.

The meet, which was organised by the Tiruchi District Athletic Association, attracted over 2,000 participants, a good number of them from the rural parts of the district.

It was conducted for men, women, and for boys and girls in the under-20, under-18, under-16, and under-14 age categories. M.Ramasubramani, Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, inaugurated the championship.

Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, Tiruchi, with a tally of 36 medals (19 gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze) and Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College with 19 medals (seven gold, seven silver, and five bronze) bagged the overall championship in the men’s and women’s sections respectively.

K.Selvakumar, Chief Educational Officer, Salem, and AM.Chellamuthu, proprietor, Shri Sangeetas Restaurant, gave away the prizes in the presence of N. Annavi, former international high jumper.
