A rape case has been booked against the former Deputy Mayor of Tiruchi, M. Asik Meera, days after a woman filed a complaint against him.

The Golden Rock All Women Police on Tuesday registered the case against Mr. Meera, who resigned from the post a few days ago.

An AIADMK member, Mr. Meera is the son of the former Minister, Mariam Pichai.

In the complaint, R. Durgeswari, 29, a resident of Sangiliandapuram, said she had known Mr. Meera since 2006 and he promised to marry her. The woman said they had physical relationship, and she got conceived.

She also claimed that she had aborted the pregnancy on different occasions. Even after Mr. Meera married another woman in 2007, he continued to maintain relationship with her and refused to marry her, Ms. Durgeswari said.

The woman, who gave birth to a girl baby recently, said Mr. Meera had threatened her. She alleged that he was the father of her baby and disowned her after she became pregnant. Police sources said Ms. Durgeswari would be called for an inquiry.

Mr. Meera had handed over his resignation to Mayor A. Jaya citing personal reasons.
