Rallies taken out to shun drug abuse

Rallies, street plays, awareness programmes marked International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in the city and other parts of the district on Monday.

V. Sampath, District Collector and Sumit Sharan, Police Commissioner, flagged off an awareness rally organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, City Police, and the Narcotics Intelligence Wing from near the collectorate in the city.

The Collector and the Commissioner along with senior revenue and police officials walked in the rally for some distance.

A large number of college and school students, carrying placards and banners, marched in the rally. The students also presented street play and skit.

Students of Government Boys and Girls Higher Secondary Schools in Vazhappadi participated in the awareness rally held at Vazhappadi town on Monday. Somasundaram, Deputy DP, presided and Selvakumar, tahsildar, flagged off the rally from taluk office. The participants marched via bus stand, travellers’ bungalow, and police station. The rally culminated in a seminar. Periyar Mannan, co-ordinator of the Periyar Training Centre, and others spoke explaining the dangerous effects of taking drugs. They urged the youth to shun drugs.

A similar rally was taken out in Ayothiyapattanam town too. Kandavel, Police Inspector, flagged off the rally from near Ramar Temple upto panchayat union office.
