Heavy rain lashed several parts of the district on Friday, resulting in a sharp drop in day time temperature.

The city received steady showers in the morning and heavy rain for over three hours in the evening, which left many of the arterial roads inundated.

Agriculture Department officials observed that the rain would be beneficial for the standing paddy crop. Lalgudi recorded the maximum of 50 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday.

The following were the amount of rainfall received in other parts of the district during the same period (in mm): Pullampadi 48.60, Samayapuram 45, Kallakudi 43.20, Golden Rock 37.40, Vathalai Anicut 36.80, Nandhiyar Head 35, Tiruchi Junction 34.80, Thuraiyur 34, Tiruchi Town 32.40, Tiruchi Airport 31.80, Marungapuri 30.40, Thuvakudi 29, Navalur Kottapattu 28, Ponnaniyar Dam 26.80, Kovilpatti 23.20, Musiri 18 and Thathiyengarpet 15.

The average rainfall in the district was 27.53 mm. Collector declared holiday for schools in the district on Saturday.
