A model sewage treatment plant based on photochemical oxidation process had been put up at Srirangam under the auspices of Environmental Cell Division of the Public Works Department for demonstration and training purposes.
The model said to be ideal for treating municipal sewage at the micro level and sewage for groups of houses.
The plant, put up by Wytewater Technologies Pvt. Ltd., at the Drinking Water Overhead Tank at Neduntheru in Srirangam, uses a mix of biological and photochemical oxidation processes to treat sewage.
The plant has a capacity to treat about 25,000 litres of raw sewage a day could be replicated by local bodies for treating sewage at micro level or by groups of 25 to 50 houses or apartments, officials said.
ReusableThe treated and disinfected sewage could be reused for flushing in toilets or even gardening. The plant is automated and the collection tanks and other equipment could even be put below the ground, a representative of the company said.
The Environmental Cell Division had been using the model to expose the technology to officials and train engineers from local bodies, Public Works Department, apart from private builders.
PWD engineers from Tiruchi and neighbouring districts had been exposed to the technology, said P. Rajendran, Executive Engineer, Environmental Cell Division, Coimbatore. The model plant would function till the end of this month, said K. Rajagopal, Junior Engineer of the Environmental Cell Division.
