Hundreds of members of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), and several other pro-Eelam parties and organisations on Monday staged a black flag demonstration in the city demanding trial of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rakapaksa in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for war crimes against Tamil minorities in the island nation.
Demanding that India vote against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, MDMK urban district secretary A. Malarmannan assailed the Central government and Congress party for inaction over the genocide perpetrated on Lankan Tamils by Sri Lankan armed forces.
Holding aloft placards depicting the portrait of slain LTTE chief Prabakaran’s late son Balachandran, the protestors raised slogans appealing to the United Nations to conduct a plebiscite in Tamil-dominated areas of Sri Lanka and provide the population the right to choose their nation.
Economic blockade
Speakers who also represented Communist Party of India, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Makkal Urimai Peravai, Ulaga Tamizhar Peravai, Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, Periyar Pasarai, and several other entities wanted the United Nations to impose economic blockade on Sri Lanka and urged India to vote for US resolution against Sri Lanka for its alleged war crimes at the current session of the UNHRC.
