All efforts would be made to ensure that rural poor in Karur district get regular and adequate work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. For the coming 2014-15 fiscal, labour budget envisaging Rs. 104.87-crore outflow has been prepared, Karur MP M. Thambi Durai told the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meet held in Karur on Saturday.
In three years, 15,787 works were awarded to be taken up under the MGNREGS and so far 3,895 works only had been completed and work on the rest were under various stages of completion.
To improve drinking water supply in rural areas, works estimate to cost Rs. 17.76 crore had been taken up over the past three years and 238 works were in various stages of progress. Already, 63,472 people in 238 habitats have benefitted under the scheme, Mr. Thambi Durai said.
That apart, 132 works at a cost of Rs. 2.21 crore had been taken up under the water regeneration projects for rural areas in Karur and the list was placed before the committee for consideration and approval.
The MP said the National Rural Livelihood Mission was implemented in 27 panchayats in Karur and Kulithalai taluks for which Rs. 1.08 crore had been received and Rs. 69.62 lakh had been spent on the work.
Under the Indira Awas Yojana, 1,586 group houses were sanctioned for Karur district and 1,087 houses were yet to be completed. The target was to meet the completion by the end of March, the MP added.
For the 2013-14 under the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana Phase VIII, 34 work plans had been submitted for consideration and approval and under the Integrated Watershed Management Programme to protect and conserve natural resources, Rs. 2.87 crore had been sanctioned during the current year.
Through the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, in the past three years, 95 schools and 119 anganwadis had got lavatories while under another scheme in 2013-14, 24 schools had been granted lavatories at a cost of Rs. 52.05 lakh, the MP told the committee.
Through the MP Local Area Development Scheme in Karur constituency, there were 80 unfinished works pertaining to this year. Officials had been instructed to complete the works within the current fiscal, Mr. Thambi Durai said.
District Collector S. Jayandhi, MLAs A. Pappa Sundaram (Kulithalai) and S. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram), District Revenue Officer M. Aruna, Project Director District Rural Development Agency, P.R.K. Ramesh, and officials from various line departments as also elected local body representatives participated in the deliberations.
