Parents should not conduct child marriages, one of the major reasons for violence against women. Parents, especially those belonging to the economically weaker section, not only use their children for child labour but also resort to child marriage without considering health and welfare of their girls, said Indira Gandhi, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee.

Speaking at a seminar on International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, organised by Rotary Club of Sakthi here on Saturday, she went down the memory lane and described the ordeal of a girl who had undergone severe hardship as a child labour and also under child marriage. She said that adequate awareness should be created among the poor people.

S. Usha, District Social Welfare Officer, said that several Acts had been introduced to protect the rights of women. She appealed to students to create awareness among the masses about the evils of child marriage. D. Muthumala and S. Sankari, both members of the committee, said that boys and girls should join hands to fight against these social evils.

They narrated the different circumstances which led to depression among girls and boys.

Allirani Balaji, president of the club, said that the programme aimed at sensitising the masses to the need for preventing violence against women. Sensitisation for young boys and girls would go a long way in preventing crimes to a great extent.
