With 10 days left, preparations for the State conference of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) scheduled for February 15 and 16 are progressing at a fast pace and a majority of works have been completed.
Work on the 200-acre site at Pirattiyur near Tiruchi will be completed in a few days, and the district unit will assume control of the conference venue on February 11, K. N. Nehru, district secretary of the DMK and chairman of the reception committee of the conference, told The Hindu on Wednesday.
The party usually plans for its State conference months in advance. For Tiruchi conference preparations have been completed within a one and half month. Pandals have been set up while erection of a giant dais and specially-designed kudils for seniors leaders have been completed.
The construction of 550 toilets and a dozen bathtubs with 25,000 litre capacity and setting up of a reverse osmosis water plant with a capacity of two lakh litres is nearing completion. A notable feature will be 10 stalls to vend books and newspapers at the venue.
No welcome archesMr. Nehru said erection of cut-outs and banners in the city and along the roads leading to the conference venue had commenced. The party would ensure that roads were not dug for erecting cut-outs and flex boards.
“To ensure this and to prevent any blockade of traffic, I have directed the party cadre not to erect welcome arches in any part of the city,” Mr. Nehru said adding that the organisers would extend full cooperation to the police.
The district unit would not object if the authorities removed the propaganda material affecting the free flow of traffic. Party treasurer M. K. Stalin would make a final assessment of the arrangements on February 10 and Mr. Karunanidhi would reach Tiruchi on February 14, Mr. Nehru added.
