Less than a month after an open gym with extended walkers’ track was declared open on Anna Nagar link road, a portion of the retaining wall on the pathway caved in on Sunday.

The incident occurred soon after the city experienced heavy rain on Sunday afternoon.

No one was injured in the incident.

Though there was no damage to the portion where the open gym has been set up, the retaining wall along the walkers’ track for about 25 meters fell into the Uyyakondam canal.

It is said that the concrete wall, which was supposed to hold the weight of the platform, failed to bear the weight. Following this, the Tiruchi Corporation authorities cordoned off the area to prevent any untoward incident. The open gym was also kept closed as precautionary measure on Monday.

Tiruchi Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran told The Hindu that the incident might have occurred due to faulty design of the walking platform.

The contractor has been asked to carry out repairs immediately.
