Lord Krishna’s different forms in different materials have been displayed at the exhibition organised by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (Poompuhar) showroom at West Boulevard Road here in the run up to Gokulashtami being celebrated in the first week of September.

The episodes connected with Lord Krishna depict him as a skirmish child, a great preacher, a master in playing on flute so on and so forth. But more interestingly it is the crawling form of Lord Krishna (Thavazhum Krishnar) which attracts a large number of visitors.

“We have stocked idols worth about Rs.15 lakh and a majority of it accounts for the ‘Thavazhum Krishnar’ dolls made of wood, rosewood, marble powder, alloy metal, black metal, granite stone besides the Thanjavur paintings,” says G. Saravanan, Manager. He said that the dolls had been brought from Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Mammallapuram, Kallakurichi, Swamimalai, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Terracotta and papier-mâché material have also been utilised for low-cost idols.

The price range for the dolls is between Rs. 150 and Rs. 1,500 depending on the material and size.

This apart, the panchaloha idols of Lord Krishna made at Swamimalai are on offer. Intricate workmanship in these idols is the hallmark of these idols.

Lord Krishna and flute are inseparable. “We have displayed a variety of idols showing ‘Kuzhaloodhum Krishnar’. Accompanied by His Consorts Sri Bama and Sri Rukmani, the idol is sought after. The price of Lord Krishna made of panchaloha material ranges up to Rs. 1.50 lakh.

“We accept orders from the customers and ensure the delivery. The price will even shoot up to Rs. 5 lakh, depending on the size of the panchaloha idol,” he says.

Special rebate

Special rebate of 10 per cent is available for the idols of Lord Krishna purchased during the exhibition. It accepts all credit and debit cards. The exhibition, which commenced on Monday, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all days including Sundays, till September 7.
