Amid recurring instances of fatal accidents on the Tiruchi–Chennai National Highway near Kondayampettai here, Union Minister of State for Road Transport Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan inspected the spot on Tuesday and held discussions with officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Accompanied by NHAI Project Director, Tiruchi N. Varadharajan, Mr. Pon Radhakrishnan spent some moments at the accident-prone spot where several people had died in road accidents.
Mr. Radhakrishnan told presspersons that his inspection was a fallout of complaints from public regarding frequent occurrences of accidents at the spot. He said six persons had died in road accidents at the spot in the last four years and 28 others had sustained grievous injuries. Remedial steps were being explored to prevent accidents at the spot and make it accident-free, he said. The Minister said he had asked the NHAI officials to carry out an inspection at the spot and added that the exercise would be completed in 10 days. Necessary action would be initiated thereafter. A senior NHAI official said the feasibility of a vehicle underpass at that spot would be looked into to prevent ccidents in that stretch. A traffic study would be done taking into account the accident details at the spot and a proposal would be sent thereafter, the official said. In the wake of frequent occurrences of accidents, the city police sometime ago had installed barricades at different points on the highway a few metres ahead of the spot to curtail the speed of vehicles while approaching the place close to Malligaipuram main road. Police sources said Sanjeevi Nagar was yet another potential accident-prone spot along the Tiruchi – Chennai National Highway where barricades been installed to curb the speed of vehicles.
