Residents of the police quarters at Srirangam have been undergoing an ordeal for the past several months because of poor condition of the premises.

Built about a couple of decades ago, the quarters lacks basic amenities, particularly the drains all around. The wastewater remains stagnant behind the quarters.

A few police personnel pointed out that the quarters was not properly maintained.

The balcony of some of the flats was in a damaged condition.

Although some effort was taken for setting up the scaffoldings for the re-construction of balconies for a few quarters, the work was lying in cold storage. The residents wanted immediate action for the proper maintenance of quarters.

They said that although some survey was taken by the authorities a few months ago, nothing concrete had materialised.

The stagnant waters posed a health hazard behind the quarters.

Residents pointed out that the problem got worsened during the monsoon. They had to also contend with mosquito menace.

Encroachments

A few residents said that “encroachments” by a few police personnel within the premises was yet another problem within the quarters. The quarters had been built with some open space at its entrance. Those residing on the ground floor had constructed sheds utilising it for parking their cars and two-wheelers.

The encroachments pose a grave threat to other residents as it hinders the visibility of vehicles entering or leaving the campus,” they said.
