Phase two: 89 local bodies go to polls in central districts

A total of 89 urban and rural local bodies – 10 municipalities, 37 town panchayats and 42 panchayat unions– will go to polls in the second phase of polling in eight central districts on Wednesday.

The ten municipalities going to polls in the second phase are Thuraiyur (Tiruchi district); Pattukottai (Thanjavur); Aranthangi (Pudukottai); Tiruvarur and Tiruthuraipoondi (Thanjavur); Mayiladuthurai, Vedaranyam and Sirkazhi (Nagapattinam); Kulithalai (Karur); and Jayamkondam (Ariyalur).

Of the 37 town panchayats going for polls, Tiruchi accounted for 13, Thanjavur seven, Tiruvarur two, Nagapattinam four, Pudukottai four, Karur four, Ariyalur two and Perambalur one.

Voters of eight panchayat unions in Tiruchi district, seven in Thanjavur, five in Tiruvarur, six in Nagapattinam, seven in Pudukottai, four in Karur, three in Ariyalur and two in Perambalur will cast their votes in the second phase.

While 1,538 polling stations have been set up in Tiruchi district, 1,354 have been set up in Thanjavur, 946 in Tiruvarur, 1,026 in Nagapattinam, 1,264 in Pudukottai, 535 in Karur, 527 in Ariyalur and 347 in Perambalur district.

The EVMs which will be used for polling in the urban local bodies and the ballot papers for the rural local bodies have already been sent to the respective unions and town panchayats, and are kept under tight security. The officials inspected the polling stations.

A total of 90 urban and rural local bodies, apart from Tiruchi Corporation, went to polls in the first phase of polling in the central districts held on Monday.
