A large number of people visited Mukkombu – the Upper Anicut - near here on the occasion of Kaanum Pongal on Thursday. People were seen gathering at the tourism centre even as early as 8 a.m. Many of them had brought food from their home for launch.

Police personnel were deployed at a number of places and on the bridges adjoining Mukkombu. About 50 home guards were also deployed. “We prevented people from reaching the waters and attempting to swim,” said an official. About 4,600 people visited Mukkombu on Wednesday and about 4,400 on Thursday, said A. Thiyagarajan, assistant engineer, Public Works Department, Mukkombu.
