Disperse from the Perambalur-Athur Road following assurance from the DSP
A number of people from Esanai, a village near here, staged a road blockade on Wednesday night demanding action against alleged harassment of a girl.
According to sources, Aarthi, a class IX student, hailing from Papankarai, is studying in Government Higher Secondary School, Esanai. She has to go on foot to the school crossing a grave yard. For sometime, she is alleged to have been harassed by some boys belonging to a different community whenever she crossed the grave yard.
On Wednesday, some boys from her village who protested such harassment were attacked by the other group in which S. Venkatesh (21) from Esanai was injured.
This sparked a protest. The people from Esanai squatted on the Perambalur-Athur Road around 9 p.m. demanding that all those who harassed girls be arrested. Besides, the Protection of Civil Rights Act should not be used against the people of other communities, they pleaded. Deputy Superintendent of Police Suhasini and inspector Sharbudeen rushed to the spot, held talks with them, and the agitation was withdrawn after about an hour on their assurance.
