People should be sensitised to socio-economic problems arising out of unchecked population growth. Government officers should join hands with youth to spread the message, said N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for School Education, Youth Welfare and Sports, on Saturday. Agricultural lands were fast being converted into habitations owing to rising population. Poverty could rise and it could also cause food shortage. It is imperative that people gave thought to issues arising out of population growth, he said speaking at a seminar organised in connection with World Population Day, observed on July 11.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, realising the importance of education in shaping the country’s economy, has allotted Rs.15,000 crore to the education sector, he said.
Earlier the Minister flagged a rally organised to commemorate the day with students marching from St.John’s Vestry Higher Secondary School to K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College campus. P.Kumar, MP, Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, A.Jaya, Mayor, M.Paranjothi and R.Manoharan, MLAs, A.Karthikeyan, Dean, K.A.P.Viswanatham Medical College, T.Mohanasundaram, Joint Director of Health, and K.Selvakumar, Chief Educational Officer, were present.
