Members of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam and All India Kisan Sabha, both affiliated to Communist Party of India (Marxist), staged demonstrations in front of the taluk offices in the district on Wednesday demanding pattas for those who have been living on the government poromboke lands.

A large number of members of both organisations, including women, staged a demonstration in front of the taluk office in Srirangam. They were led by Palanisamy, district secretary of All India Kisan Sabha. Vetriselvan, city secretary, CPI (M), participated.

The agitation in front of Tiruverumbur taluk office was led by Radhakrishnan, Thuvakudi taluk secretary of the Sangam, and the agitation in front of Manapparai taluk office was led by Rajendran, Manapparai taluk secretary of the Sangam. Similar agitation was held in front of the taluk offices at Lalgudi, Thuraiyur, Musiri and Thottiam.

At all the places, farmers’ representatives presented petitions containing their demands to revenue officials at the end. The protests were part of the State-wide agitation launched by the CPI (M) demanding distribution of pattas to tenants on government poromboke, temple and trust lands.

Similar agitation was held in front of taluk offices in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts.
